About this sheet
What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.
Seven rows of animals: elephants, lions, pandas, kangaroos, rhinos, a crocodile and pigs, each with a box for the number.
Animals are the second most familiar category after fruit, so this is a comfortable sheet, but two rows do something more.
The elephants and the pigs are drawn at noticeably different scales, so a row of large animals sits near a row of small ones. Children who judge quantity by how much of the page something fills will get these two rows the wrong way round, which is the point.
The crocodile row has a single animal in it. As on the clothes sheet, a row of one interrupts the rhythm of counting and makes a child stop and think about what is being asked. Coming near the end of a long sheet, it is a good test of whether they are still paying attention or answering on autopilot.

Common questions
My child said the elephants row had more than the pigs row when it did not.
They are judging by how much space the animals take up rather than by how many there are. Counting each row out loud with a finger usually settles it.
Is this a good sheet to start with?
It is a reasonable second sheet. Fruit is the gentler starting point, but animals are almost as familiar and this one has more going on.
