The row with a single item is the one to pay attention to. After five or six rows of counting groups, a child reaches a row with one thing in it and often hesitates, or writes a larger number, or looks up to check whether it is a trick.
It is not a trick, and the hesitation is real. Counting has a rhythm to it, and one does not have a rhythm. There is nothing to count along. Children who have settled into the pattern of the sheet have to stop and think about what the question is actually asking, which is a small but genuine shift.
The shoes and gloves rows are worth a mention too, since both are things that come in pairs. If your child says two for a row of five gloves, they are counting pairs rather than items, which is worth a conversation rather than a correction.

Common questions
Why did my child struggle with the row that has one item?
Counting has a rhythm and one has no rhythm to it. After several rows of groups, a single item makes children stop and reconsider what the question is asking, which is normal.
My child said two for a row of five gloves.
They are counting pairs rather than individual items, which is actually quite sophisticated. Worth talking about rather than marking wrong.
