About this sheet

What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.

Five rows: rounded loops along a line, wide scallops, a tight wave, a long tapering line, and a large flat spiral at the bottom.

The flat spiral in the last row is the single most demanding shape in the pre-writing set. It winds inward through several full turns, and it cannot be done in stages. Once the hand starts, it has to keep going and keep tightening, with no natural point to stop and restart.

Children love it, which is the useful part. A spiral looks like drawing rather than practice, so they will attempt it willingly and produce several minutes of continuous controlled movement without ever thinking of it as a worksheet.

The upper rows are gentler and follow the same wave and scallop family as the earlier sheets, so this page works as a recap with one hard thing at the end.

What your child practises

Familiar wave shapes above, and the hardest single shape in the set waiting at the bottom.

  • Winding a spiral inward without stopping
  • Sustaining one movement for several turns
  • Tracing wide and tight waves in one sheet
  • Enjoying practice that feels like drawing
