About this sheet
What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.
Five rows to trace: a square wave, a sharp zigzag, tall pointed curves, a gentle rolling wave, and rounded humps. Choti stands at the start of each row.
This is the first sheet in the pre-writing set and the place to begin if letters are still ahead of your child. Nothing here is a letter or a number, which is exactly the point. A child can practise the movements writing needs without any pressure to produce something recognisable, and without anyone being able to tell them it is wrong.
The five rows are not variations on one idea. The square wave needs sharp corners and pencil control that stops dead. The zigzag needs diagonals. The wave needs a curve that never stops moving. Those are three different demands on the same hand.
Rows can be done across several days. There is no reason to finish a sheet in one sitting, and a child who does one row well has got more from it than a child who rushed all five.

Common questions
Why trace lines instead of letters?
Because the movements are the same but there is no right answer to get wrong. A child builds pencil control without the pressure of producing a recognisable letter.
What age is pre-writing practice for?
Roughly 3 to 5, and it is worth doing before letter tracing rather than alongside it. Hand control comes first, letter shapes second.
Should my child finish all five rows at once?
No. One row done carefully is worth more than five rushed, and there is nothing wrong with spreading a sheet across several days.
