About this sheet

What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.

A dotted dog face with floppy ears to trace and colour, a dotted uppercase D beneath, and the line D for Dog.

A D is a straight line down and one large curve out and back, two strokes. It is simpler than a B, which needs two bumps, but the two letters are close enough that children confuse them for months.

The thing worth watching is where the curve rejoins the vertical line. Children often finish the bump short of the bottom, leaving a small gap, or run it past the line entirely. Both are worth pointing at rather than explaining, since the fix is visual.

The dog is the friendliest picture in this stretch of the alphabet and children usually want to colour it before tracing the letter. Letting them do it in that order is fine. Nothing about the sheet requires the letter to come first.

What your child practises

A spine and a single large curve, easier than B but easily confused with it.

  • Joining a curve back to a vertical line
  • Making one large controlled bump
  • Telling D apart from B
  • Linking the letter D to the sound in dog

Common questions

Is D easier than B?

Yes, because it has one curve rather than two bumps that need to match. Children still confuse the two letters for months, which is normal.

My child wants to colour the dog before tracing the letter.

That is fine. Nothing about the sheet requires the letter to come first, and a child who has enjoyed the picture is usually more willing to try the letter afterwards.
