About this sheet
What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.
A dotted shoe with laces to trace and colour, a dotted uppercase S below, and the line S for Shoe.
An S is one continuous stroke that curves one way and then immediately curves back the other. No lift, no corner, just a reversal in the middle of a single movement, and that reversal is what makes it one of the hardest letters here.
It is also, along with Z, the letter children reverse most. A backwards S is a perfectly balanced shape, so nothing about it looks wrong on the page, and children will happily produce it for a year or more without noticing.
The useful preparation is not more S practice. It is the C sheet, because an S is two Cs facing opposite directions stacked on each other. Children who can draw a confident C already have half the movement.
The shoe is a long horizontal outline with laces, which is different work again and a good warm up before the letter.
What your child practises
One stroke that reverses direction halfway, which makes it one of the two most reversed letters.
- Reversing a curve mid stroke
- Stacking two opposite curves
- Tracing a long horizontal outline
- Linking the letter S to the sound in shoe
Common questions
My child writes S backwards constantly.
A reversed S is a balanced shape, so nothing about it looks wrong. Children produce it for a year or more without noticing, and it is not a warning sign on its own.
What helps more than repeating the S?
The C sheet. An S is two Cs facing opposite ways, so a confident C means half the movement is already there.
