About this sheet
What is on the page, and how to get the most out of it.

This is the only digit made from a single straight line, top to bottom, with no curve, no corner and no change of direction. That makes it the right place for any child to begin, and it is worth being clear about why. Every other numeral asks the hand to do at least two things. This one asks it to do one thing well.
The balloon is doing real work here. A string hangs down from a balloon, which is exactly the direction a 1 is written in, so the picture reminds your child where to start without you having to say it. Children who begin numerals from the bottom develop a habit that becomes hard to undo later, and a top-anchored image is a gentler correction than a spoken instruction.

Common questions
Which number should my child trace first?
This one. The 1 is a single straight line with no curve or change of direction, so it is the only numeral that asks the hand to do just one thing.
My child starts the 1 from the bottom. Does it matter?
It does over time, because bottom-up habits get harder to undo once writing speeds up. The balloon picture helps, since a string naturally hangs downward from the top.
Does this sheet teach Devanagari numerals?
No. It uses the 1 to 10 forms used in Indian schools, and adds the Hindi number word एक alongside. Devanagari numerals are a separate thing.
