A 5 combines everything the earlier digits practised. There is a straight line down, a curve to the right at the bottom, and a flat bar across the top that most children add as a second stroke after lifting the pencil.
The top bar is the part that goes wrong. Because it is added last and separately, it often ends up too long, too short, or floating away from the vertical line it should join. Watch specifically for whether the bar touches the top of the down stroke.
A 5 is also frequently reversed, usually alongside a reversed 2 and 3. If all three are reversed, that is a consistent pattern rather than three separate problems, and it typically resolves together.

Common questions
My child leaves the top bar of the 5 floating.
That is the most common problem with this digit, because the bar is added last as a separate stroke. Point out where it should touch the top of the down stroke before they start.
My child reverses 2, 3 and 5 but not the others.
Those three are the digits most often reversed, and reversing all of them is a consistent pattern rather than three separate difficulties. It usually settles together.
