A 3 is two curves stacked on top of each other, both opening to the left. The difficulty is not the curve itself, it is that both curves face the same way. Children who have just learned to alternate directions on a 2 often flip the second curve, producing something closer to an E or a backwards 3.
This is the most commonly reversed digit of the ten, and it stays that way longer than the others. It is not a reading problem and not a warning sign on its own.
The butterfly helps because a butterfly has two wings on the same side of its body when seen from the side, which is precisely what the two bumps are. Trace the top wing, then the bottom wing, same direction both times.

Why does my child keep writing the 3 backwards?
Both curves of a 3 face the same way, and children who have just learned to alternate directions on a 2 often flip the second one. It is the most commonly reversed digit and usually settles by six or seven.
Should I correct a reversed 3 every time?
Constant correction tends to make children write less rather than better. Tracing the dotted guide while saying top wing, bottom wing does more.
